Geotechnical Data Report Bruce Park Dam
Bowie Resources, Limited
•? April 2001
Section 1 - Introduction
1.1 Purpose
This report presents the results of geological and geotechnical field investigations and
laboratory testing performed for the Bruce Park Dam and Reservoir Project. The purpose of
these investigations is to collect data for use in 1) evaluating potential impacts to the dam and
reservoir from proposed underground coal mining operations, and 2) evaluating the
feasibility of raising the crest elevation of Bruce Park Dam 3 to 6 feet to increase the
reservoir storage capacity.
1.2 Scope of Work
GEI performed the following scope of work for this project:
. 1. Reviewed and compiled available geological and geotechnical information for the
area
2. Developed, arranged, and observed completion of a subsurface investigation program,
which included soil and bedrock borings, field testing, and installation of open-
standpipe piezometers
3. Performed a geologic reconnaissance of the dam and reservoir site to supplement the
findings from the data review
4. Performed laboratory tests on selected soil and rock samples collected during the
subsurface investigations
5. Prepared this geotechnical data report
1.3 Background
Bowie Resources, Ltd. retained GEI Consultants, Inc. to develop a program to evaluate
potential impacts to Bruce Park Dam related to mine-induced ground vibrations or surface
subsidence associated with a proposed expansion of Bowie's underground coal mining
operations. The proposed mining activity was anticipated to be located approximately 2,100
feet below the ground surface and could be as close as 1,300 feet from the dam site.
GEI Consultants, Inc. 1 99292 01-04.16 Geotechnical Data Report
