B-Seam and Strata Above B-Seam Water Quality Analysis, Bowie Coal Mine
Water Quality in the B-Seam
Water quality data are available from 3 wells installed in the B-Seam as listed from southwest to
northeast:
• TC-03-01 B, Terror Creek, B-Seam, September 2003 to present
• DD-NM4x98-28, In mine N. mains, B-Seam, June 2003 to May /2004 (abandoned)
• DH-67B, Hubbard Creek, B-Seam, June 2004 to present
The water quality in the B-Seam is reasonably consistent in wells DD-NM4x98-28 and DH-67B with
pH values (field) ranging from 6.5 s.u. to 8.8 s.u. and pH (lab) ranging from 7.47 s.u. to 9.37 s.u.
Concentrations of total dissolved solids (TDS) are typically high, ranging from 2,186 to 8,131 mg/l.
The high TDS values are common in coal seam groundwater. Total iron concentrations range from
0.011 to 31.8 mg/1 and total manganese concentrations range from less than minimum detection limit
(<MDL) to measurable values of 0.027 mg/1 to 1.129 mg/l.
Well TC-03-1B has very high pH values ranging from 9.2 s.u. to 13.09 s.u. with an average value of
11.8 s.u. Coal seam groundwater with pH values greater than 9.5 s.u. is very unusual (Hem, 1970) and
commonly indicates contamination from cement or bentonite grout that can occur during initial well
installation or from well casing failure (Boulding, 1996). The TDS values at this well ranges from
2,054 mg/1 to 4,107.5 mg/l, with the highest values occurring in 2003 through 2005, indicating
possible grout contamination during initial well installation where the water clears over time;
however, the pH still remains high. The total iron concentration at this well ranges from 0.06 mg/1 to
21.5 mg/l (suspect value) and averages 2.7 mg/1. The total manganese concentrations for this site are
low ranging from <MDL to 0.403 mg/1(suspect) and averaging 0.077 mg/1(Table 2 and Appendix A).
?J
September 2008 HydroGeo, Inc.
