M03106GE
Our analysis was based on soil strength characteristics obtained
from laboratory direct shear strength tests and triaxial shear
strength tests of samples of soil material encountered in our test
borings obtained during our field study. we understand that the
coal gob material will be obtained from the coal wash plant. The
coal wash plant is currently under construction and not yet produc-
ing coal gob. For this reason, we obtained a sample of the gob
material currently being generated from the mine. In addition we
obtained soil strength characteristic information for other coal
wash plant gob material. The soil strength information for coal
gob material from other wash plants was provided by Mr. Jim Stover,
P.E., J.E. Stover and Associates. The soil strength values used
in our analysis included:
Site soil material:
. an internal angle of friction of twenty-four (24) degrees,
. cohesion of six hundred ninety (690) pounds per square foot
and
. a moist unit weight of one-hundred twenty-five (125) pounds
per cubic foot, and
Topsoil and Cover material:
. an internal angle of friction of twenty-four (24) degrees,
. a cohesion of three-hundred sixty (360) pounds per square
foot., and
. a moist unit weight of one-hundred twenty (120) pounds per
cubic foot.
Existing'Mine Coal Gob
an internal angle of friction of twenty-two (22) to twenty-
five (25) degrees,
a cohesion of five-hundred seventy-five (575) and
a moist unit weight of ninety-eight (99) pounds per square
foot.
Estimated Wash Plant Coal Gob
an internal angle of friction of thirty-two (32) degrees,
a cohesion of two-hundred (200) pounds per square foot and
a moist unit weight of ninety-eight (98) pounds per square
foot.
In our stability analysis we varied the soil strength values of
the proposed coal gob to assess the sensitivity of the analysis to
varying soil strength parameters of the coal gob. The variations
in our analysis produced relatively significant and predictable
I⢠
6
~tam6ert ana ~,~,ooeiareo
GONSULTIMG GEOTEGMNIGAL ENGIN EER3 AMD
MATERIAL TESTING
