We <br />are experienced and available to provide material testing services. <br />We have included a copy of a report prepared by Van Gilder Insur- <br />ance which discusses testing services during construction. It .is <br />our opinion that the owner and engineer be familiar with the <br />information. If you have any questions regarding this concept <br />please contact us. <br />We suggest that your construction plans and schedule include <br />provisions for geotechnical engineering observations and material <br />testing during construction and your budget reflect these provi- <br />sions. <br />It is difficult to predict if unexpected subsurface conditions <br />will be encountered during construction. Since such conditions may <br />be found, we suggest that the owner and the contractor make provi- <br />sions in their budget and construction schedule to accommodate <br />unexpected subsurface conditions. <br />• 5.1 Structural Fill Quality <br />It is our understanding that the proposed development may includA <br />compacted structural fill. The quality of compacted structural <br />fill will depend on the type of material used as structural fill, <br />fill lift thickness, fill moisture condition and compactive effort <br />used during construction of the structural fill. Engineering - <br />observation and testing of structural fill is essential as an aid <br />to safeguard the quality and performance of the structural fill. <br />Testing of the structural fill normally includes tests to deter- <br />mine the grain size distribution, swell potential and moisture- <br />density relationship of the fill material to verify the material <br />suitability for use as structural fill. As the material is placed <br />the in-place moisture content and dry density are tested to indi- <br />cate the relative compaction of the placed structural fill. We <br />recommend that your budget include provisions for observation and <br />testing of structural fill during construction. <br />Testing of the compacted fill material should include tests of <br />the moisture content and density of the fill material placed and <br />compacted prior to placement of additional fill material.
