The Division has
the following comments and questions.
2007 Annual Hydrology Report (AHR)
Except for two omissions, all of the required hydrologic monitoring program sampling parameters and
frequency were followed in 2007. The two omissions were the up gradient and down gradient Fire
Mountain Canal sites, due to an error on the part of the contract sampler. The other required sampling sites
were visited according to the sampling frequency. All of the required chemical and physical parameters
were sampled as well.
The precipitation data supplied in the 2007 AHR shows that an increasing drying trend seems to be
developing since 2005. There were quite a few instances of spring and stock pond monitoring sites that
were dry or nearly dry. There were, correspondingly, quite a few monitoring sites with increased
concentrations of chemical constituents as a result of the decreases in surface water and ground water
availability. However, there do not appear to be any adverse effects to the surface or ground water
hydrologic regime in the mine site area.
The Division has no adequacy review questions concerning this report.
2007 Annual Mine Inflow Report
The 2007 Mine Inflow Report was complete. As had been the case in 2006, there were no mine water
discharges during 2007. Mine water inflow in 2007 was estimated at about 50 gpm and did not occur at
specific point sources.
The total consumptive water use at the mine, including pond evaporation and dust suppression, decreased
from 291.3 acre-feet in 2006 to 261.7 acre-feet in 2007. This total consumptive water use at the Bowie No.
2 Mine is well below the predicted value of 326.7 acre-feet that is stated in the permit application. The
total water usage rate at the mine decreased considerably from 65.9 acre-feet per one million tons of mined
coal in 2006 to 47.8 acre-feet per one million tons in 2007.
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand lunction • Duraneo ArtivP and Inartivr± Minac
