INTERNAL MEMO
TO: Jim Stark
FROM: Jim Burnell
SUBJ: Southfield North Dewatering Well
14 Oct 2002
Jim, I have reviewed the information provided concerning this well along with the 2001
Annual Hydrology Report for the Southfield Mine. I concur with Kent that preservation
of this dewatering well and periodic monitoring can provide valuable information about
the hydrologic system at the Southfield Mine in the post-closure period. Where we have
had means to monitor the resaturation of underground mines, they have proven to be
excellent tools for later evaluation.
Presumably the operator will be providing a projection of mine resaturation that includes
an estimate of whether the mine will eventually refill and discharge. A well into the mine
itself will allow the operator to monitor the progress of the resaturation process.
I don't think frequent monitoring is necessary. I would recommend water level quarterly
so that we can see if any seasonal patterns are established, and the mine's normal full-
suite analysis annually (during the same month each year). Those water level
measurements, accompanied by a good, accurate, detailed elevation map of the mine
workings will be good tools as the years go by.
The AHR itself is fine. I have no additional comments on that.
Jrb
Cc: Sandy Brown
