BACKGROUND OF THE TWIN PINES NO.2 MINE <br />Initial Permitting History <br />Located in Fremont County in the Canon City Coal Field, the Twin Pines No. 2 Mine <br />site is in a historically active mining area. Nearly 200 abandoned mines with <br />associated surface facilities have disturbed nearly 600 acres in the vicinity of the <br />mine. As a result, the majority of the Twin Pines No. 2 Mine surface disturbance area <br />is characterized by past mining disturbances. $ <br />5, r I ?I. v u <br />The Twin Pines No. 2 Mine was permitted owned by T ines Investment, L P <br />(TPI). The operation mined private coal privately-o ed surface. The permit was <br />issued fech e January 24 1984, and a bond s submitted in the form of A 4-w o <br />certifi =-,th)e f posit in th ount o The mine operated until August <br />01 A <br />Division was notified the mine would cease operations and begin <br />1993 <br />reclamation due to the loss of a coal contract. Reclamation activities included sealing <br />the portals, removing all surface facilities, backfilling and grading, redistributing <br />topsoil, and reseeding of the disturbed areas. Due to historic mining on both <br />disturbed areas, a limited amount of topsoil was available for re-application. The <br />Golden Quality No. 5 Mine and the Last Chance No. 2 Mine operated from 1968- <br />1975 at the portal area and the historic Twin Pines No. 1 Mine operated from 1956- <br />1981 at the coal sales yard area. <br />On November 3, 1aonelease applied for a Phase I bond release for both claimed areas <br />of t:he mine. This was approved on December 19, 19 a d went final <br />approximately 30 days later with no public comment received. Th iv' ion released <br />$32,454.00 to TPI.
