STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Phone: (303) 866-3567
FAX: (303) 832-8106
January 18, 2006
Mr. Jeff Boleski
25509 West Warren Ave.
Dearborn Heights, MI 48127
Re: Twin Pines Coal Mine, #C-83-058
Dear Mr. Boleski:
Bill Owens
Governor
Russell George
Executive Director
Ronald W. Cattany
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
The Division of Minerals and Geology (Division) is beginning the process of terminating jurisdiction of the
Twin Pines coal mining site located in Fremont County, Colorado. During the next two summers, we will be
conducting vegetation sampling over a period of a few days during the peak of the growing season. This
information will be used to make a quantitative determination of the success of the revegetation efforts on the
reclaimed area and will also be used to support any subsequent Division written findings regarding our
termination of jurisdiction at the site.
As you may know, a sediment pond remains on the reclaimed bench at the mine site. This pond remains stable,
is well vegetated, and holds water for a short time after snowmelt or significant precipitation events.
Conversely, it dries up fairly rapidly, likely due to infiltration, evaporation, and use by wildlife. A stockpile of
fill material is positioned immediately east of this pond to be used, if needed, to backfill the pond depression to
the approximate topography of the surrounding area.
The Division would like to know if you would like to have this pond reclaimed as originally planned, or whether
you would like it to remain as a permanent impoundment to support the post-mining land use of rangeland and
wildlife habitat. Bond money remains in an amount sufficient to conduct this work if you choose to have the
pond removed.
Also, during periodic inspections, the gate is found locked. We would like to know if it is possible to get access
through the locked gate to support the staff and haul equipment related to the vegetation sampling effort this
summer. As I mentioned, access through the gate is only necessary for approximately a week, at most.
Please feel free to call me to discuss these issues at your convenience. My direct number is 303-866-4931. You
can also contact me by email at mailto•kent. og rhamgstate.co.us if you have any questions.
