Cramer, Johanna
From: Mathews, Dan
Sent: Monday, January 07, 2008 3:21 PM
To: Brown, Sandy
Cc: Boulay, Mike; Stark, Jim; Talvite, Marcia; Cramer, Johanna
Subject: McClane Canyon Mine; TRA 6 Request for Review Assistance
Sandy,
TR-16 for McClane Canyon Mine was deemed complete January 3rd, 2008. The application proposes a 38,000 cubic yard
coal mine waste disposal site within the McClane Canyon Mine permit area. The disposal site would be located in the area
currently occupied by the mine sediment pond and soil stockpiles. The stockpiles would be relocated and a new sediment
pond would be constructed to replace the existing pond. Approximately 4.75 acres of previously undisturbed land would
be disturbed in association with the project.
I will need to request review assistance for from staff with expertise in the following disciplines:
• Sediment and Drainage Control (New sediment pond sizing and design, diversion and collection ditch designs, etc);
• PHC impacts of the proposed waste disposal, and adequacy of the hydrology monitoring plan;
• Engineering and Geotechnical aspects of the proposed waste pile and sediment pond embankment;
• Reclamation Cost Estimate for the proposed project.
I am assuming that Mike will tackle the drainage control and PHC items, Marcia the Engineering/Geotechnical, and Jim the
cost estimate.
I would like to request review memos by February 4, 2008.
1 have scheduled a site visit for this Wednesday, January 9. Given the adverse weather conditions, I expect that Marcia
may want to postpone her trip (I wouldn't want to try Red Mountain Pass in these conditions), and Jim will not be coming
over either, so it may just be Mike and myself this time. We can schedule another time when the weather is better for
Marcia (and Jim if he needs to get out there).
Let me know if anyone has questions.
Thanks
Dan
