Mathews, Page 2
Because of the uncertain nature of what the quality of water in the sedimentation pond will be, we
recommend that the pond be lined. Lining will eliminate leaching of contaminates into the ground
water, along with the potential to mobilize selenium from the Mancos shale. We also recommend that
wildlife should be fenced out. Escape ramps should be provided for bear, small mammals, reptiles, and
"amphibians that will gain access to the pond despite the fencing.
The Division of Wildlife has previously reviewed the reclamation plan related to the terrestrial
environment. We believe that the existing plan will be adequate, and believe our previous
recommendations will apply equally well to the new disturbance.
Finally, I would like to thank you for considering the needs of wildlife in the energy development
process. Please contact Paul Creeden (District Wildlife Manger) at 970-255-6112, if you have questions
regarding these comments.
Sincerely,
De4' V(?
Dean Riggs
Area Wildlife Manager
cc: Ron D.
