BAMBERG ECOLOGICAL
Environmental Consulting Services
mid-work site visit was performed and documented in a trip report.'
Once this work was completed, topsoil stockpiled around the perimeter of the site was hauled
onto the newly disturbed areas and spread. Not enough topsoil was available to cover the en-
tire site, so it was spread in a mosaic pattern on the newly disturbed surfaces (see Photo 1). If
vegetation proves to grow better in the topsoil areas, these areas will provide a seed source for
further expansion of the vegetation across the site over time.
Domingo Gallegos, G-4 Excavation, disc graded the central flat area during the week of October
20, 2008; a few days before the first seeding effort (see section on Seed Dispersal). In late Oc-
tober 2008, 1 surveyed the completed grading work. All grading was performed to my satisfac-
tion for revegetation concerns.
Seed Collecting and Purchasing
Local, native seeds had previously been collected from the Mesita Hill area and stored for later
distribution on the mine site. During October 2006, local shrubs and grasses had very good
seed set and most of the seed was still on the plants. Bulk seed was collected by direct har-
vesting from plants and from underneath bushes and in depressions that collect wind-blown
seed. Three native shrubs - four-wing saltbush (Atriplex canescens), green rabbitbrush (Chry-
sothamnus viscidif/orus), and winterfat (Ceratoides Janata) - and one native grass - blue grama
(Bouteloua gracilis) - dominated the species from which seed was collected.
Approximately 443.4 pounds (825 gallons by volume) of bulk seed was collected with pure live
seed estimated to comprise approximately 80-85% of the mix after processing. The seed was
stored in plastic bags inside 55-gallon drums, inside a local building, for two years until the seed
was distributed on the mine site. Details of the seed collection were provided in a trip report .2
The locally collected seed was originally intended for distribution on only the newly disturbed
portions of the mine site only. However, it was decided to seed all portions of the site that had
little or no vegetative cover including the center, flat, portion of the site.
