DRAFT

1 INTRODUCTION
1
This report describes the regional numerical groundwater model developed by Water
Management Consultants (WMC) for the Collom Project. The regional model is based
on the conceptual hydrological model developed for the Collom study area, and was
formulated using the FEFLOW numerical modeling code.
The objectives of the regional model include:
• To develop a better understanding of the overall hydrogeologic flow
system and water balance in the Collom study area;
• To provide a tool for evaluating dewatering issues for the proposed
Collom Mine including dewatering rates and dewatering system design;
• To provide a tool for evaluating hydrogeological issues associated with
other potential surface and underground mining operations in the Collom
study area; and
• To allow the defensible evaluation of possible hydrologic impacts
associated with the proposed Collom Mine during operations and post-
closure.
The conceptual hydrogeological model for the site is described in the Collom Project
Pre-feasibility Hydrology Report, WMC, August 2005. The conceptual hydrogeological
model of the study area includes:
• A description of groundwater flow conditions in the area, including
groundwater levels and gradients;
• A descriptions of factors affecting groundwater flow mechanisms, such as
structural controls, layering of coals and interbeds;
• A description of how the complex geology can be simplified in to
hydrogeological units;
• The hydraulic characteristics of hydrogeologic units;
• Groundwater recharge and discharge mechanisms and rates; and
• A description of the aqueous geochemistry within the study area.
2572-R3 Colowyo Coal Company, L.P.
Water Management Consultants
