A shaft heater was permitted (MR07-225) for the 18RT intake shaft, but
has not yet been installed. Temporary shaft heaters were permitted (MR07-227) and installed on the 6MN
intake shaft during winter 2007/2008, to address dangerous icing conditions in the shaft. Based on TCC's
experience with the 6MN temporary shaft heaters, a permanent shaft heater installation is proposed for the
6MN location, and modifications have been made to the design and layout for the 18RT shaft heater
installation.
Installation of the shaft heaters will allow for heating of ventilation intake air during the winter months to
maintain safe and comfortable temperature and humidity conditions in underground mine work areas. The
proposed modifications to the planned and permitted 18RT and 6MN shaft heater installations will not
significantly change the location and general configuration of these installations, will occur entirely within
the existing shaft pad areas, will result in no new surface disturbance, and will not affect existing drainage
and sediment control structures. The proposed modifications will involve:
6MN Shaft Heaters
Replacement (initially) of the two temporary shaft heaters and skid-mounted propane tank by six
temporary heaters and a larger skid-mounted propane tank, to increase BTU output
Subsequent replacement of the temporary heater units by four larger permanent heaters mounted on
concrete pads, installation of concrete pads and saddles to permanently mount the larger propane
tank, and replacement of the temporary propane supply hose with a buried propane pipeline running
from the supply tank to the heater pads
G:\Environmental\REVISION\MINOR-RV\MR09-234 Shaft Heater Modifications\MR09-234 Shaft Heater
Modifications TL.doc
