(1) Production Methods and Equipment
• Operation of the New Elk Mine started in 1952. 'fhe New Elk Mine was a typical
underground coal mining operation with access to the Allen seam through au inclioc
slope driven from the surface to the coal seam. Mine development was by
conventional and continuous mining methods depending upon the types of equipment
available which could be utilized in the recovery of the Allen coal seam. Mining
methods included room and pillar mining and longwall mining. Approximately 75%
of the coal was produced by continuous miners working in a room and pillar
configuration. The remaining 25% of the coal production resulted from longwall
mining methods. The New Elk mine had the capability of pt'oducing LS million tons
of coal per year. T'he last production occurred iu 1989.
The major mining equipment used at the New Elk mine is listed in Table 18 Mining
Equipment List. Surface facilities associated with the undergt'ouud operation
consisted of facilities necessary for the production and loading of coal into rail cars
for transport. In addition other ancillary facilities consisted of shops, warehouses,
administrative buildings, bathhouses and anon-coal waste disposal area near the West
Portal area. Operational facilities included ventilation shafts, ventilation fans,
escapeways, and production and supply slopes to access the Allen seam. Control of
surface water in the surface facilities area is provided by ditching and drop structures
to seditnent control structures for holding runoff for settlement andlor lreaUnent prior
to discharge. Mine water is provided through small clams and pump stations located
• adjacent to the Purgatoire. Waste water treatment was provide by septic tanks and by
a sewage treatment plant.
Roads are required to provide access to the surface facilities of the mine. These roads
include employee access and service maintenance roads to associated water storage
tanks, pumping stations, ventilation Taus, and supply yards. Coal haulage roads were
also employed in the transport of coal from adjacent mines and within storage areas at
the New Elk mine.
RN-04 2.05-2 Revised A/30/U4
