Munger Canyon Mine, 12g. 2
We walked the reclaimed mine haulroad to the former portal benches. I identified rock rip-
rapped permanent drainways that crossed the reclaimed haulroad. Only one of the dainways
required light hand maintenance, the area was mostly stable with no major signs of erosion.
There are a few areas needing silt fence repair and basic channel maintenance at the outlet ends
of the channels. I identified the rip-rap drainways and other point locations with a GARMIN
eTrex Vista HCx and printed them onto a USGS quadrangle map of the Munger Canyon Mine
(see copy attached).
At the reclaimed ventilation portal, there is settling of the backfill that has exposed a small
opening into a void area. This area should be closed by hand work as soon as possible, and
monitored to avoid a public hazard. Mr. Boulay made this suggestion during the inspection.
The 1.3 acres of roadway on BLM land (from culvert# 6 to the property line) does not meet
conditions agreed to for release. Culverts need to be removed on this stretch and replaced with
low water crossings. This work will be completed after the permittee has ensured backfilling &
grading and revegetation success on the portal backfills, in or to allow for equipment access.
Water impoundments were not included in the bond release application.
The Loma Loadout is 2.9 acres and along the south side of the railroad tracks in Loma. Surface
water runoff control is adequate; and there is some coal material in and along the berm that may
eventually need to be disposed of appropriately. One silt fence need to be repaired.
The total of 17.2 acres proposed for release consists of 14.3 acres at the Munger Canyon Mine,
and 2.9 acres at the Loma Loadout. (Total permit acres are 1,028; and 20.8 acres were disturbed).
Monies proposed for release will be specified in the DRMS Proposed Decision document.
There have been no formal citizen complaints filed with the DRMS since my last inspection
here. This concluded the inspection.
Address any questions concerning this report to Henry Austin, Senior Reclamation Specialist, at
haustingosmre.g_ov or to (303) 293-5019.
