Fall 2008 Subsidence and Geologic Field Observations
Box Canyon, Apache Rocks, and South of Divide Mining Areas
i
5.20 Photographic Observation Point 11
This particular location has been visited on each of the last three field visits and assigned
different location numbers. For this reason, this location has now been established as
Photographic Observation Point 11 so that continued observations and imagery can be obtained
to assess changes that may occur over an extended period of time.
Photographic Observation Point 11 was specifically created to view an overhanging cliff and
rockfall area near the West Elk Mine load out and stacker facilities which were evaluated in
detail during July 2006 (see Map 1). The massive sandstone cliff and overlying ledges are the
sandstone that overlies the abandoned Bear Coal Mine located in the C-seam. The massive
sandstone is about 40 feet thick. The overlying ledges are an estimated 25 to 30 feet thick.
is No noticeable changes were observed in this rockfall area since annual observations were
initiated in the summer of 2006. As a result, no photograph was taken at this location during the
fall 2008 field visit.
5.21 Traverse N-N'
Traverse N-N' begins at the fork in the Deer Creek and Dry Fork roads and continues southward
up the Deer Creek road to a locked gate near two stock water tanks in the upper Deer Creek
drainage near the middle of the NW'/4 of Section 4, Township 14 South, Range 90 West (see
Maps 2 and 4).
The traverse is above the projected, and unmined, main mine haulageway and above unmined
Longwall Panels E3, E4, and E5) near the northwestern edge of unmined Longwall Panel E6.
The overburden depth to the E-seam varies from 400 to 500 feet thick. Mostly light reddish gray
to light brown soil and alluvium (but some colluvium) derived primarily from clay and silt of the
0 Wasatch Formation was observed along the traverse.
831-032.790 Wright Water Engineers, Inc.
