Apparently, the CDPHE is concerned that such a discharge situation might
be circumventing the intent of a point source discharge.
The revised probable hydrologic consequences section of Technical Revision No. 57 states that mine
water that will be pumped from the Bowie No. 2 Mine into the abandoned workings of the US Steel
Somerset Mine will eventually seep out of the abandoned mine through rock outcrops and flow into
the river. This outcrop seepage could possibly be characterized as a dispersed discharge.
Therefore, as part of the adequacy review of TR-57, the Division requests that BRL provide
documentation from the CDPHE that the pumping of Bowie No. 2 mine water into the abandoned
workings of the US Steel Somerset Mine as proposed in TR-57 meets with their approval.
If you have any questions, please call me.
Sincerely,
?kseph J. dash
Environmental Protection Specialist
cc: Jim Stover P.E.
