Larry Mondragon Reclamation Report
Project site:
The reclamation project is reportedly within an 3 acre parcel that falls within Section 9,
Township 32 North, Range 11 East NMPM, Conejos County, Colorado.
Purpose:
To stabilize areas with existing or expected high rates of soil erosion by wind and/or water and to
restore degraded sites that cannot be stabilized through normal methods. If these sites are left
untreated, critical areas can be severely damaged by erosion and sedimentation or cause
significant off-site damage.
Soils:
This parcel is composed of a Garita cobbly loam, 0-3% slopes (Map Unit Symbol #17) and
Monte loam (Symbol #37). The Garita soil is a deep, gravelly and cobbly well-drained soil
about 20 inches thick. The subsoil is very cobbly loam to a depth of around 60 inches. The
Monte loam is a deep, well-drained soil with a brown to pale brown surface layer around 9
inches thick. The subsoil is pale brown loam about 9 inches thick. The substratum, to a depth of
more than 60 inches, is also loam.
Ecological sites:
The Monte soil supports a Mountain outwash ecological site which is a shrub/grassland
community. The primary shrubs are winterfat (Krascheninnikovia lanata), Greene's rabbitbrush
(Chrysothamnus greenei), and fourwing saltbush (Atriplex canescens). The understory layer
commonly consists of blue grama (Bouteloua gracilis), western wheatgrass (Pascopyrum
smithii), Indian ricegrass (Oryzopsis hymenoides), needleandthread (Hesperostipa comata), and
bottlebrush squirreltail (Elymus elymoides).
The Garita soil supports a Limy bench ecological site which sustains similar plant associations to
that of a mountain outwash, although as the name suggests, is more calcareous than the mountain
outwash. The primary shrubs are winterfat, Greene's rabbitbrush, fourwing saltbush, and a
subspecies of rubber rabbitbrush. The key indicator of this site is winterfat, unless it has been
grazed out. The understory layer commonly consists of blue grama, bottlebrush squirreltail,
Indian ricegrass, western wheatgrass, sand dropseed (Sporobolus cryptandrus), and scarlet
globemallow (Sphaeralcea coccinea).
Reclamation criteria and considerations:
Use native species or mixes (recommendation included) that are adapted to the site. Use adapted
improved varieties and cultivars in the following order of preference, when available:
1. Certified Named Varieties (blue tagged)
2. Named Varieties
3. Common Seed
If soils in the project area have insufficient depth or physical characteristics unsuitable for
development of vegetative cover, spread 3"- 4" of topsoil or soil material having the capability of
Mondragon Reclamation Report Page 1
