rapid and drastic decline in the entire grove. It is probably best to just let Nature run her course and
allow natural selection to do the thinning.
Overall Conclusion: This exclosure contains an unusual grove of trees when compared to
the more common cottonwood growths along the stream. Yet, being a bit older than Exclosure 2 and
much older than Exclosure 1, this vegetation has differentiated itself into two very distinct vegetation
units. The largest is the cottonwood growth, but adjacent to that and in the most moist areas is a
willow community. These two almost show no interaction at all with a very clear boundary
separating them. That well defined boundary is probably a bit more intense than would otherwise
occur as root competition is undoubtedly severe. But it is also indicative of the fact that the habitat
characteristics for strong cottonwood growth is quite distinct from the habitat for strong willow
growth.
2008 Annual Report Coal Creek Wetland Mitigation Permit DA 198811488 Page 13
