Cattany
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
TO: Dan Mathews
FROM: Mike Boulay Vtb-
DATE: December 30, 2008
SUBJECT: Seneca Coal Company, Seneca 11 Mine (Permit No. C-80-005)
Phase II Bond Release Request (SL-3) Adequacy Review
I have reviewed Seneca Coal Company's (SCC's) responses to our December 18, 2008 letter
concerning the water quality demonstration presented in the SL-3 application. In SCC's response
letter (dated December 22, 2008) they have provided additional data as requested. For Pond 002,
they have provided water quality statistics for an "adjacent non-mined area" from the same
timeframe as the data presented for the 002 discharge in the SL-3 application since there are no pre-
mining data available. For Ponds 004 and 008 they were able to present a comparison of pre-mine
water quality with post-mine water quality for TSS.
I have checked SCC's analyses and find no problems with data presentation as submitted. The
amended information is adequate to demonstrate compliance with Rule 3.03.1(3)(b). Please let me
know if you have any additional questions.
C: Sandy Brown
Denver Project File
office of office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
