Yhen road ditches discharge onto open terrain, a number of measures will be taken to
• protect the terrain from erosion. Peabody will utilize measures as revegetation, riprap,
straw dikes, and silt fence to protect the terrain from erosion. 4hen the road ditch
discharges onto en area disturbed by toed construction, the terrain will be revegeteted to
control runoff. In an area where revegetetion would not be sufficient to control erosion,
the area will be riprapped. Temporary measures to reduce erosion (straw dikes,
containment ditches, silt fences ,etc) will be employed while the area is undergoing
revegetetion such es strew dikes, containment ditches, etc.
Seneca typically constructs ditches on the inside of roadway cuts tar drainage. A typical
V-ditch section would be a minimum of two feet deep with side slopes 2:1 ar
flatter. As most road cuts ere into resistant bedrock-type materiel, ditches normally do
not require lining. Culverts will be designed and installed to minimize the runoff volume
conveyed in each ditch. Culverts and ditches will typically be designed using SEDCAD to
predict the peak runoff and Manning's equation to determine the peak velocity and flow
depth (see Attachment 13-7).
If the ditch is not stable, then a larger ditch section will be used end/or adequately
line the ditch in order to comply with applicable reguleti ans.
Orainage from access roads within the areas disturbed by mining and reclamation activities
(see Exhibits 13-2 end 13.3) will be constructed to meet the requirements of 4.05.2 and
such stress roads will at a minimum be constructed and maintained to minimize erosion of
the disturbed area. Erosion control measures to be used singly or in combination include
but are not limited to:
e. Stabilizing all exposed surface areas to promote a reduction in the rate and
volume of runoff;
b. Using straw dikes, riprap, check dams, berms, geotextile materials, mulches,
vegetation sediment filters, contour furrows or other measures that reduce
overland flow velocity, reduce runoff volume, or trap sediment; or
c. Such other measures to minimize erosion resultant siltation end disturbance to
the prevailing hydrological balance.
Surf acin9• See Exhibit 13-9 for typical detail.
• Culverts. Each ec teas road will be designed, constructed, and maintained to have adequate
27
