'ica OFFICE of ARCHAEOLOGY and HISTORIC PRESERVATION
December 16, 2008
Michael A. Cunningham
Environmental Protection Specialist
Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman Street, Rm. 215
Denver, CO 80203
Re: Journey Ventures, LLC, Journey Ventures Pit (File No. M-2008-080) (CHS #53832)
Dear Mr. Cunningham:
Thank you for your correspondence dated December 10, 2008 (received by our office on December
11, 2008) regarding the subject project.
A search of the Colorado Cultural Resource Inventory database indicates that one cultural resource site
of particular significance has been recorded within the proposed permit area. 5WL268, the Frazier Site
is officially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). In addition, research
conducted at this site has been critical toward our understanding of Colorado Prehistory.
We strongly recommend that the proposed mining activities avoid this site. If site avoidance is not
possible, we recommend further consultation with our office in order to identify options to avoid,
minimize, or mitigate the adverse effect to the sites.
Should human remains be discovered during mining activities the requirements under State law CRS
24-80 part 13 apply and must be followed.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment. If we may be of further assistance, please contact Shina
duVall, Section 106 Compliance Manager, at (303) 866-4674 or shina.duvallQchs.state.co.us.
Sincerely,
ward C.
