This groundwater monitoring requirement was a stipulation of the original
permit because the initial plan for disposing of excess site dewatering and process water was
groundwater infiltration and recharge. It is the understanding of DRMS that this is no longer the
case, and that all excess water from the site is now discharged directly to the South Platte River
under an approved and active Colorado Wastewater Discharge Permit.
Because groundwater infiltration and recharge is no longer a part of the current mining plan,
DRMS feels that it is appropriate at this time to discontinue the groundwater monitoring program.
Please do not remove or abandon the existing monitoring wells as they may still be utilized for
monitoring groundwater levels, or for future monitoring activities. If groundwater infiltration and
recharge are to be used again at the site at any time in the future, new baseline data will need to
be collected and groundwater monitoring will need to be reinstated. DRMS would require a
meeting at that time to determine in advance what the appropriate groundwater monitoring
program and parameters should consist of.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. If you have any questions, please contact me at
(303) 866-3567 x8140.
Sincerely,
Z///--
4e `
Eric Scott
Environmental Protection Specialist
Cc: Tony Waldron, Senior Environmental Protection Specialist
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
