2005 Edna Mine Vegetation Sampling Report
4. Moffat BRU: Topsoiled
¦ The Moffat BRU: Topsoiled encompasses approximately 215 acres. The pre-disturbance
vegetation communities were 83% snowberry/sage and 17% oak mountain shrub.
' Sample adequacy for vegetation cover was obtained in this unit with 20 transects.
Mean herbaceous vegetation cover was 47.3%. This is significantly higher than the
' mean for the reference area (24.1 %). Thus, the Moffat BRU: Topsoil exceeds the liability
release standard for herbaceous cover. See Tables 4-4 and 4-5 for absolute and relative
cover data for this unit.
Sample adequacy for production was obtained in this unit with 40 transects. Mean
herbaceous production was 160.9 g/m2 or 1435.2 lbs/ac (Table 4-6). This is significantly
higher than the mean for the reference area of 80.2 g/m2. Thus, the Moffat BRU:
' Topsoiled exceeds the liability release standard for herbaceous production.
As shown on Table 4-3, there were six plant species with a minimum of 3% and
maximum of 40% relative cover present in this unit. Because more than five species
were present, the combined relative importance requirement is automatically satisfied.
Thus, the Moffat BRU: Topsoiled meets the liability release requirements for diversity.
The mean shrub density in the Moffat BRU: Topsoiled was 2,119.6 shrubs per acre. This
exceeds the required minimum density of 1,000 shrubs per acre. Sample population
adequacy for shrub density was not obtained with 40 transects in this BRU. However, as
outlined in the sampling plan, it is assumed that the central limit theorem applies and the
mean density was established. The high variance in density reflects the "patchy"
distribution of shrubs within this BRU. See Table 4-7 for shrub density data for this unit.
4.1. Supporting Documentation
Tables 4-1 through 4-8 summarize vegetation data and statistical tests for the Moffat
BRU: Topsoiled. Table 4-9 provides a list of the community plant species sampled at
this BRU. Figure 4-1 is a site photograph, and Figure 4-2 is the transect location map.
The following tables and figures verify that the West Ridge BRU: Topsoiled meets
¦
liability release requirements.
Habitat Management, Inc. 25
