• 5.7.4 Deposition of Over
burden into Mines Areas
General
Backfilling of certain mine areas continues to be a mine planning feature in MLE.
Mine area backfilling during the MLE will occur in the Main Cresson Mine area,
East Cresson Mine area and the North Cresson Mine areas. Amendment No. 8
proposed the backfilling of the North Cresson Mine area and incorporation of this
area into the SGOSA and this is carried forward in the MLE with the Schist Island
portion of the North Cresson Mine area scheduled for backfilling. Backfilling is
also carried forward from Amendment No. 8 for the East Cresson Mine area and
the Main Cresson Mine area with some changes proposed and discussed in the
following section. Backfilling is shown conceptually on Drawings C4, C-5, and
C-6. Note that the amount of backfilling which will occur in a particular mine
area is dependent on potentially changing conditions such as project economics
and may vary from that shown on Drawing C-5. Drawing C-5 is intended to
represent the best estimate of backfill scheduling for the MLE.
Construction
Backfilling will be accomplished by end-dumping the material in "lifts" that vary
in height, depending on the logistics of truck hauling, the geographic locations
relative to the mines, and overburden removal scheduling. For areas which are
• backfilled to the level of the existing ground surface, these areas will be graded to
provide positive surface water drainage and will be blended with the surrounding
topography. Currently, the East Cresson Mine area and Schist Island portion of
the North Cresson Mine area will be backfilled to the existing ground surface.
Additional backfill will also be placed and recontoured to cover the highwalls in
the Schist Island portion of the North Cresson Mine area Backfill will result in
only a partial end-dumped backfill of the Main Cresson mine area. The Globe Hill
portion of the North Cresson Mine area and the South Cresson portion of the
Main Cresson Mine area are not planned for backfilling. Drawing F-1 shows the
post-mining topography for backfilled mine areas.
Backfilled portions of the North Cresson and East Cresson Mine areas will be
graded to be free draining. Drainage will be directed to one of several enhanced
management ponds. EMP9 is located at the base of the backfilled Schist Island
portion of the North Cresson. EMP 10 and EMP 15 are located within the
Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company
Cresson Project Mine Life Extension
5-20
