Division required a continuous record of alluvial ground water levels and water quality data.
Narrow bands of alluvial-colluvial material extend about one mile up Munger Canyon from
the confluence with East Salt Creek. Monitoring well GW-4, which is 40 feet deep and is
located at the lower part of Munger Canyon, was dry in April 1981 during the period of the
year of snowmelt and highest precipitation. Test pits TP-1, TP-2 and TP-3, dug to a depth of
ten feet in the Munger Creek alluvium, had no traces of mottling and only a very slight
increase in moisture. Additionally, plant species present on the alluvium indicate the absence
of natural subirrigation in the Munger Creek alluvium.
No wells or springs have been identified within three miles of the mine. Thus, the Munger
Canyon mining operation will not effect the quantity or quality of any ground water that is
put to beneficial use off site.
The operator has committed to the following ground water monitoring program:
1) Quarterly monitoring of wells GW-1, GW-3, and GW-6 for Static Water Level, pH,
Temperature, and Specific Conductance.
2) Water quality sampling of mine water discharges as required by CDPS permit. Due
to the sealed and reclaimed status of the Munger Canyon Mine, and historical
absence of mine inflow/discharge, discharges are not anticipated.
3) Monitoring all of non-seep inflows into mine to include source, quantity, duration
and quality (pH, Temperature, and Electrical Conductance). Due to the sealed and
reclaimed status of the Munger Canyon Mine, such monitoring is not
practicable, and is no longer required.
4) Monitor quantities of water discharged from the mine, consumed in the mine and
imported for use in the mine. Due to the sealed and reclaimed status of the
Munger Canyon Mine, there is currently no discharge from the mine,
consumption in the mine, or importation for use in the mine. Water use would
be limited to occasional road watering during future reclamation operations.
5) Results of the quarterly groundwater monitoring shall be submitted to the Division
immediately after data collection and analysis, and will be compiled and summarized
within an Annual Hydrology Report, to be structured around the normal water year.
The Division has determined that Monitoring Wells GW-2, GW-4, GW-7, and GW-8 are no
longer necessary for impact monitoring of future bond release demonstration, and these wells
were sealed by the operator in 2007.
E.
