Operation before 2007
Mining began on the southern end of the flat terrace in 1980 after permit approval and proceeded
northward. The gravel terrace is approximately 40 feet to 80 feet in depth and, in many places
along the pit bottom; it has been mined to within 2 feet of the shale bedrock below. This bedrock
is Cretaceous Age Mancos Shale. Mining has taken place with bulldozers, loaders and trucks; no
blasting has been used. The mining slope at the pit perimeter has been approximately 1H:IV but
most areas have now been backfilled to the designated reclamation slope of 3H:1 V. The
remaining area for backfill is along the eastern edge of the current pit, as shown on Map C-2.
As of the start of 2007; most of the existing flat terrace has been mined out and imported fill has
been placed in the northern sections of the pit area. Prior to the year 2000, very little imported
material was brought to the site. Since that time, the amount of imported fill has steadily
increased and has now almost filled the northern section of the pit almost to the approximate
original contour.
No groundwater has been uncovered in the pit but rainfall runoff and some excess irrigation
water can be found in minor locations within the pit. The mine office, crusher/screen plant, wash
plant, concrete plant, asphalt plant, ponds, fuel storage facilities and employee housing area will
not change for the 2007 Amendment. These facilities are described in the following sections. No
new facilities will be added except for a new canvas storage building described under Section 5.
All existing facilities will stay in the pre-2007 mine area for the mining of the expansion area. As
of the start of 2007, the disturbed area of the operation is 54.6 acres.
Vagneur Pit June 07 D-1
