2. General Mining Plan
General Items - Expansion Area Mining
The expansion area will be mined in phases which have been outlined in order to best mitigate
visual impacts from all viewpoints in the proximity of the mine, which was the primary design
criteria for the expansion area. It is not possible to mine without ever being visible; however a
great amount of effort has been put into ensuring that the mining visibility is minimized to the
northeast, east and southeast. This was the desire of the landowners as well as Pitkin County. All
of the mine designs are based on having the same annual production as was experienced in 2003;
which was approximately 235,000 tons. Future production may vary slightly depending upon the
market conditions. A breakdown of the materials which will be processed on site can be seen
below in Table 1. Map C-3 shows cross-sections through the expansion area and the existing pit
mined to its extents. The cross-sections show the current topography, the material which will be
removed from mining during each year and the final reclaimed topography.
'r..L I- 4
¦ MM.Y
Average Annual Product Distribution
Product Tons Sold
Asphalt 82,077
Road Base 72,021
Pit Run 6,439
Boulders 1,065
Screened Rock/Sand 68,339
Crusher Fines 2,048
Natural Fines 13,404
Total 235,393
It is seen from the cross sections of Map C-3 that the gravel reserve in the expansion area will be
mined in slices that tilt downward toward the existing pit. It is expected that mining of the
expansion area will require 16 years, although this is dependent upon local demand. Map C-4
shows the conditions at the end of the projected Year 7 of the expansion area mining. Map C-5
shows the mining at the end of year 15. The expansion area will be mined to a 3H:1 V slope,
therefore, the current steep slope which exists on the east side of the pit will be eliminated by the
new mining.
