•
be mitigated through the installation of slurry walls around the perimeter of Lakes 2, 3, 4,
and 5 prior to the start of dewatering these stages (see Mine Plan-Exhibit D). Potential
ground water impacts associated with mining of the 17 acre unlined lake will be minimal
due to the limited
time it will be dewatered (1-2 years) and the fact that it will be backfilled as part of the
reclamation plan.
Monitor wells have already been installed around the Holton Lakes area to the east
and they will be installed around the Morton Lakes pit at least one year prior to the start
of dewatering. Since Morton Lakes shares a common boundary with Holton Lakes, there
are two monitoring wells presently in place: one on the southeast side near the Morton
residence and another in the northeast corner near the Blunt Residence, slightly further
north of the Morton Lakes boundary. The Applicant will install additional ground water
monitoring wells in order to evaluate ground water fluctuations and the potential for
• adverse impacts to neighboring wells due to mining. Ground water elevations in the
monitoring wells will be measured monthly. In the event that these neighboring wells are
adversely affected by pit dewatering the Applicant will promptly take steps to mitigate
any adverse impacts.
Post Reclamation
Ground water mounding and shadowing associated with the slurry wall sealed
portions of the pit are not anticipated to produce any adverse impacts to adjacent
properties. Potential ground water impacts will be mitigated because of the proximity of
the South Platte River and Big Dry Creek to the sealed pits. Water elevations in the
South Platte River and Big Dry Creek will serve to regulate ground water elevations in
the alluvium adjacent to each of the sealed pits.
8.3 Discharge Permits
Groundwater will be pumped and discharged directly to the South Platte River
and Big Dry Creek. An NPDES Permit (No. COG 501501) has been obtained from the
Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment for ground water discharges to
C]
2
