Mining and Safety
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Dear Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety:
This letter is in respo e' to a letter from the Applegate Group, Inc. dated October 4, 2007 to
Greg Monroe, Color-ado Division of Parks, 1313 Sherman Street, Room 618, Denver, CO
80203. This letter informed us of an application by Front Range Aggregates, LLC, 3655
Outwest Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80910 for an amendment to their existing Parkdale Quarry
permit for the extraction of construction materials. The location of this quarry is approximately
10 miles west of Canon City, Colorado north of U.S. Highway 50.
The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) has a recreation site at Parkdale on the
opposite side of the river from the Parkdale Quarry. Our site is primarily used as boating access
on the Arkansas River through the Royal Gorge and is used by tens of thousands of people each
year. AHRA has always enjoyed a good working relationship with the Parkdale Quarry,
however last year there was a considerable amount of dust generated from their mining activities.
AHRA received a number of public complaints as well as concerns from our employees
stationed at the Parkdale site as to the quality of the air because of the inordinate amount of dust.
From our standpoint, Front Range Aggregates, LLC would need to make provisions in their
amended proposal for more complete dust abatement at the Parkdale Quarry before the request
for the proposed amendment should be approved.
I thank you in advance you're your consideration of this request. If you have any questions or
would like to discuss this further, please contact me at 719-539-7289.
Robert K
AHRA P
STATE OF COLORADO • COLORADO STATE PARKS
Bill Ritter, Jr., Governor • Harris D.
