The first area visited was the refuse disposal area (RDA) located just east of the portal site.
This area is gently sloping land on a south-facing, pinion-juniper slope just east of the former
portal location. It is bisected by a small roadway and berm that directs runoff to the east
toward a sediment pond. The site is covered mainly with rabbitbrush and a few, small
volunteer pinion trees. Vegetation was dried down due to the time of year and it appeared
that some grazing occurred during the growing season.
East of the refuse disposal area is the reclaimed portal bench area. A sediment pond is
located on this bench and serves as the primary sediment control measure for the RDA and
the portal areas. The pond outlet (below) consists of a primary spillway riser with a trash
rack intact. The riser also includes a dewatering weep hole located at the bottom of the riser.
The pond appeared to have held a small amount of water at some time in the recent past but
was dry at the time of the inspection.
i
4
