Broadcast seeding will be used
for areas where drill seeding is not practicable.
Mulching Techniaues
A straw mulch will be used to provide surface protection and store moisture during
the first growing season. The application rate will be about 4,000 pounds per acre.
Only clean grain straw that is free of noxious or problem weeds will be used. The
straw will be anchored by mechanical crimping, polypropylene erosion control
netting or with one of the various tackifying agents available on the market.
Irrigation and Weed Control
Use of the planting and mulching methods specified above will result in satisfactory
plant establishment, barring abnormally dry conditions. There are no plans to
irrigate the reclaimed areas.
Noxious Weed Control Plan
This weed control plan is concerned with the control of all varieties of noxious
weeds on the mine site. It was developed in coordination with Webb Callicutt,
Coordinator, Delta County Noxious Weed Program (872-2110). Noxious weeds
of concern in the general location of the Bowie No. 2 Mine permit area are; 1)
Russian knapweed, Musk, Canadian and Scotch thistle, Houndstounge, Oxeye
Daisy, Burdock and Yellow toadflax.
Yellow toadflax can be spayed anytime it is discovered. Spay with Banvel, 1.5
oz/gal.
All of the other noxious weeds will be sprayed with Curtail, 2.0 oz/gallon mixed with
a non-ionic surfactant at 1 quart per 100 gallons of spray. It will not be applied
when spray particles may be carried by air currents to areas where desirable plants
are growing. Spraying should be performed when temperatures are under 80° F.
2.05 - 54 - 05/08
