Renner
FROM: John T. Doerfer ,J T
RE: Vegetative Monitoring Proposal , Climax Mine, File No. M-77-493
AMAX committed to monitoring vegetative success as a part of approval of
Amendment No. 2 on October 18, 1989. The attached correspondence dated
April 3, 1990 describes their proposal . The Mayflower tailings pond dam face
has recently be graded out to a smooth 3 to 1 slope and covered with
12-18 inches of plant growth media from a borrow area located nearby. Dam
Nos. 1 and 2 on the Robinson tailings pond will be resoiled with borrow
material from the open pit. Plans are to seed these areas with the approved
grass mixture. Bruce suggested quantitative vegetation monitoring be
performed by AMAX to track the success of this work. -
Could you please have Gregg Squire or Larry Oehler review this proposal for
adequacy? Both Gregg and Larry are familiar with the site and inspected the
site during the amendment review. Gregg suggested cicer milkvetch be added to
the seed mixture and AMAX agreed although the exact amount needs to be
defined. I have attached a copy of the approved plan for reference. A review
of my notes from a conservation with Bruce on September 26, 1989 suggested the
following be considered in the monitoring plan:
1 . Cover, composition and frequency be monitored by species;
2. Slope aspect may be important, if so, 4 plots per each aspect might be
needed;
3. Reporting should be annually the first 3 years, biannually thereafter.
Please let me know who will be conducting the review and how I might provide
any further assistance. If you have any questions , please contact me.
/ern
cc: Bruce Humphries
5825F
