Summit County sewage sludge, commonly referred to as "biosolids,"
currently is transported to the county landfill for disposal and composting.
Due to Summit County's population growth and pressures to reduce
landfill use and disposal costs, Summit County Biosolids Producers have .
been working to develop alternatives to current practices.
A cooperative program has been developed to transport the municipally
generated biosolids to the Climax Mine for use as a soil amendment in
reclamation and revegetation of high-elevation disturbances. Working
together over the last two years, Summit County Biosolids Producers and
the. Climax Molybdenum Company have negotiated the agreement and
obtained the necessary approvals from the State Department of Public
Health and Environment to proceed with this unique and environmentally
friendly program.
A celebration of this event will be held Thursday, March 13 at 9 a.m., at the
Old Summit County Courthouse in Breckendridge, to witness the signing of
the agreement establishing the Biosolids Land Application Program. This
ceremony will recognize the hard work and cooperative efforts of Summit
County Biosolids Producers, local, state, and federal government officials,
and the Climax Molybdenum Company.
The Biosolids Land Application Program results in enhancing the
reclamation work at the Climax Mine while helping to create additional
beneficial use of biosolids.
Summit County's residents and the environment are the ultimate winners!
I2 S I11T I COPPER MOUNTAIN CONSOLIDATED METROPOLITAN DISTRICT
