Vii( i .? <br />Tvpical Upland Plant Communitv vvith overstoi-v of Gambol oak or aspen. <br />Occurring across the project area over a variety of elevations and aspects is the Aspen <br />Vegetation Type. This type inhabits less steep slopes overall than the other tree- <br />dominated vegetation types on site, though its presence on sonle\vhat steeper slopes <br />under the proper soil conditions is not uncommon. MLICh ofthe aspen is found as <br />stringers in drainages with larger stands limited to higher elevations in the area. It <br />intergrades with most of the other vegetation types on site and characteristically has a <br />more open. highly productive understory. The dominant tree species is aspen. Common <br />understory species include Woods rose (R(7su tirr00(1cii). mountain brome (Bromuc <br />n uv-.i7in1wus), elk sedge (Comex gt ?veri), white- flowered peavine, Fendler meadow-rue <br />(7lullictrrlm f w(lleri), and American Vetch (Ficiu wnericans) (Johnston, 1997). Wetter <br />expressions of this type, in depressions or adjacent to seeps and springs. often form <br />transition wetland vegetation conlnlunIties. III nianv areas the transition aspen stands are <br />dying out with minimal replacement regeneration. Like Gambel oak. there were aspen <br />stands that were beginning to leaf out when late frosts occurred in May. Many aspen at <br />lover elevations did not leafout as normal and, based upon bird observations. probably <br />had an affect on the amount of use in sonle stands in 2007. <br />i
