(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: M-1996-060
INSPECTION DATE: 11 /05/8 INSPECTOR=S INITIALS: FC'C
OBSERVATIONS
This was a routine site monitoring inspection conducted by DRMS at the Firestien Pit site. The inspection was
conducted by Eric Scott and Tony Waldron of CDRMS. DRMS representatives met with Jim McFarland (VP) and
Chris Lang (Land Manager) of Hall Irwin at the site at approximately 1315. The site entrance is located off the
west side of 83rd Ave just south of where it intersects County Road 64 (also known as "O" Street). The site is WNW
of the Town of Greeley in Weld County.
DRMS toured the site with the Hall Irwin representatives. Current activity in the mine consists of mining at the
north end of Parcel 1 of the site, cement production and sales of stockpiled material on the original site, and
reclamation in Parcels 2 and 3 of the site. Reclamation activity in Parcels 2 and 3 appears to be progressing
well with final contouring completed and vegetation establishing. The grasses around the lake at the far SW
corner of Parcel 2 were noted to be doing extremely well. The areas of the mine on the south end of Parcel
1 are mined out, but reclamation has not been completed in that area due to the uncertainty caused by the
potential extension of County Road 64 (also known as "O" Street) which may pass through that area of the site.
If Weld County does, in fact decide to extend the road through the site, a technical revision for the site will
need to be submitted to the Division for the appropriate modifications to the reclamation plan. According to
DRMS records, no portion of this site has been released from the permitted area to date.
During the site tour, the mine appeared to be in compliance with the approved mining and reclamation plan.
The only problem noted during the inspection was the (still limited) presence of tamarisk at the site. These
noxious plants need to be removed before they become established and widespread. In areas still to be
reclaimed, this could easily be done using a dozer when the area is recontoured or filled. If they are found in
areas where reclamation is essentially complete and vegetation is beginning to establish, other weed control
measures such as spraying or cutting and stump treating may be required. The presence of Tamarisk is cited as
a problem on page 3 of this report along with the corrective actions.
This concluded the inspection and DRMS left the site at approximately 1415.
I & E Contact Address
NAME: Jim McFarland
OPERATOR: Hall Irwin
STREET: 309A 4th Ave
CITY/STATE/ZIP: Greeley CC) ROA31
cc: F CE
F 131-
F FS
F HW
IF HMWMD (CH)
F SE
F WQCD (CH)
IF OTHER
