PICEANCE (BOX ELDER) PIT
CONVERSION APPLICATION FROM 110 TO 112
INTRODUCTION
Piceance Pit, or Box Elder Pit as it is sometimes referred, is currently a small wet sand
and gravel operation with 9.93 acres permitted under the 110 status. Rio Blanco County
purchased this pit from United Companies in March 2005, and is proposing to enlarge the
area of the pit by 24.20 acres making it a total of 34.13 acres.
The Piceance Pit will be a great source of road construction material for the County that
is so difficult to find in the Piceance Creek Basin. It will be used to maintain county
roads as a result of the tremendous impact the oil and gas companies are creating in the
region. Currently, the closest county gravel pit to the Piceance Creek area is on average
35-50 miles away.
The permit land is owned by Halliburton Energy Services, Inc. They agreed to convey
the leased land and water rights to Rio Blanco County and are in favor of enlarging the
permit acreage.
Rio Blanco County will abide by all conditions of the new 112 permit and final
reclamation will be done promptly after mining is completed, ensuring that the land is
restored to the best possible condition for its reclaimed use.
