s
STATE OF COLORADO
y \
* , Roy Romer, Governor
1876 0'
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
r/JoMINEDLANtD RECLAMATION DIVISION
FRED R. TA ✓"
or
DATE: August 22, 1989 ✓ C ✓
TO: Larry Oehler, Gregg
-Squire
FROM: John T. Doerfer :J J
RE: Inspection Schedule, Climax Amendment, File No. M-77-493 r....
An inspection of the Climax Mine has been scheduled for September 6, 1989.
The inspection will focus on revegetation aspects of the reclamation plan.
Visits to revegetation test plots will be included.
The amendment updates the planned schedule for reclamation of the mine and
proposes a reduction in bond. A major activity planned is regrading and
revegetation of the faces of the tailing dams. The two primary questions I
need your assistance on are:
1 . What changes are proposed to the growth media placement plan and
revegetation plan between the approved permit and the amendment proposal?
2. Will the plan work?
It is encouraging that Climax has made a commitment to move forward with all
the reclamation that can be performed now while leaving areas affected by
future mining in a standby mode. This is our opportunity to work with them on
updating the reclamation plan - any and all questions are open for discussion.
After the inspection I would also request you provide me with written
questions and comments for an adequacy letter to be mailed by mid-September.
The permit file is on the shelf - a copy of the amendment package is
attached. I have also attached a copy of the report on the inspection Bruce
and I conducted on August 1 for your review. Your assistance on this is
appreciated.
cc: Bruce Humphries
Steve Renner
913OF/scg
215 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver,Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.(303)866-3567
