Christy Woodward
September 17, 2008
Page 6
Issue 5
The potential for the DRAs to affect groundwater quality will be largely evaluated in a
separate work plan that addresses geochemical characteristics of the rock stored in the
facilities. However, this work plan includes evaluation of hydrogeological characteristics of
rock units in the area of the DRAs through logging of planned exploration drill holes. As the
exploration drill holes are installed, the hydrogeological characteristics of the rocks will be
logged and the presence of groundwater will be identified where possible. The information
collected in-this program will be incorporated into evaluation of the site hv_ drogeological
framework.
Data Collection Procedures
This section discusses groundwater well installation, the number of samples, proposed to be
collected, locations, sampling and analysis methods, and the basis for using a particular
analysis method. This section is organized as follows:
¦ Sampling Locations and Analyses: Provides rationale for well installation and sampling
locations and laboratory analytical methods to be used to characterize groundwater;
¦ Field Activities, Methods, and Procedures: Discusses the well installation and sampling
procedures and equipment required.
Table 1 is a summary of well installation and data collection activities and Table 2 identifies
the laboratory analytical methods; sample containers, preservation requirements, holding
times, and reporting limits. Energy Laboratories, Inc. (Energy) will be the primary analytical
laboratory used foi"this project, with the exception of"tritium analysis. Tritium analyses will
be performed by Geochron Laboratories. This data collection work plan was developed in
coordination with Energy and Geochron regarding available and appropriate analytical
methods and other'laboratoMT-specific information.
Sampling Locations and Analyses
Sampling locations and analyses for groundwater are planned for the Sunday Mines Group in
order to achie%,e the objectives of the hydrogeologic evaluation. Groundwater will be sampled
within five monitoring wells. 'rhe following section describes the location, extent, and
rationale for well installation and groundwater sampling.
Groundwater Monitoring Well Installation
The planned monitoring wells will be installed in the underground workings in order to
facilitate groundwater sampling in close proximity to the mine, provide representative
samples, and minimize surface disturbance. The monitoring wells will be installed in sub-
horizontal underground boreholes using a ring drill or jack leg drill at a maximum drill
length of 100 feet. Each well will be drilled at an angle of approximately -20 degrees from
