The required fee of $257 for the renewal of this substitute water supply plan has been
submitted. The original plan was approved on September 28, 1999 and it was most recently renewed on
February 21, 2001.
Plan Operation
This plan seeks to replace depletions resulting from mining operations at the Kurtz Ranch
Resource and Recover pit ("Kurtz"). The depletions that results from the mining operation are
evaporation, water lost in mined product, and dust suppression. The mine is located in Weld County
in parts of Sections 28 and 29, Township 3 North, Range 67 West of the 6th P.M. This SWSP will
cover the replacement of the projected depletions of 238.28 acre-feet per year. The replacement will
be made using Last Chance Ditch shares and water stored in two lined pits. The storage water will be
from Rural Ditch storage water rights and excess stored water from Last Chance Ditch. The Rural
Ditch stored water is also used in the Durham Pit SWSP (DRMS M78-056).
Depletions
The anticipated net depletion for this SWSP is 238.28 acre-feet per year. The currently exposed
groundwater at the site totals 8 acres. However, the plan anticipates that a total of 76 acres of water
surface will be exposed at the site if dewatering ceases. The evaporation calculations were based on
the entire exposed surface area in the event that the dewatering ceased and this plan will cover
replacements for depletions associated with the 76 acres.
You have provided a monthly breakdown of the annual depletions made up of 214.32 acre-feet
of net evaporative loss, 20.60 acre-feet of water lost with the mined product (which represents 700,000
tons of mined product), and 3.36 acre-feet of water used for dust control.
Office of the State Engineer
1313 Sherman Street, Suite 818 • Denver, CO 80203 • Phone: 303-866-3581 • Fax: 303-866-3589
www.water.state.co.us
