E. Stover & Associates
2768 Compass Drive, Suite 101
Grand Junction, CO 81506
RE: Bowie Resources Limited -Bowie No. 2 Mine
Vegetation Plan
Deaz Mr. Stover,
For ~Idlrfe-
ForPeople
We understand the difficulty of establishing woody plant stocks on reclaimed mine ]ands. Thus we do
understand your desire to establish grassy azeas in the reclamation project and agree that these types of
azeas will benefit wildlife. However the shrub component in this area is a very important part of the
habitat. Therefore we feel that an effort should be made to establish some smaller shrub clumps (from
one to three acres in size) interspersed throughout the reclaimed azea. If seed mixes fail to establish the
shrubs, we recommend that an effort be made by using live stem plantings. Also, if wildlife browsing
proves to be a limiting factor in establishment ofthe shrub clumps, we recommend that the clumps be
temporarily fenced to allow the plants to become hazdy enough to withstand those pressures.
We have reviewed the seed mixes that aze proposed for reclamation purposes. Due to the grass
components being dominant in the proposed change of the reclamation plan we have made some
suggestions on additions and deletions to the seed mixtures. The overall objective of these changes is to
obtain a native grass mixture which will maximize the palatability and overall quality of the planted
species in order to maximize benefits to wildlife.
In shrub mix: Add: Sagebrush (Artemesia tridentata)
In all mixes: Delete: Intermediat Wheatgrass
Replace with: Thicksp>7ce, Streambank and/or Slender Wheatgzass (Elymus lanceolatus
ssp.
