The type of soil you have will irtftuence: <br />What type and how much forage your land can produce. <br />a How quickly water moves through the soil. <br />a If the soil will filter animal wastes before they reach groundwater. <br />w How often you need to Irrigate. <br />¦ How much water needs to be applied in each irrigation. <br />a How much fertilizer is needed. <br />For information about your soil type, refer to your county's soil surrey available from the <br />Natural Resource Conversation Service (MRCS) office (listed in your phone book under <br />United States Government, Dept. of Agriculture). You can also find soil surveys at the <br />County Extension Office and the public library. <br />Irrigation Management <br />Nothing in your management efforts will <br />affect production of your pasture more <br />than providing adequate irrigation. <br />Different soil types hold various amounts <br />of water. If all of the water held by the <br />soil was removed, the plants would die. <br />A general rule is that when the plants <br />have removed 50% of the water held by <br />the soil, It is time to Irrigate and refill the <br />rooting zone.
