This discharge has been designated as outfall 011. The purpose of this bioassay <br />was to determine if the facility complies with the acute WET portion of the Colorado State Industrial <br />General Minimal Discharge Permit. The test organisms utilized were the fathead minnow (Pimephales <br />promeles) and cladoceran (Ceriodaphnia dubia). Test results indicate that the effluent was acutely <br />toxic to fathead minnow but was not acutely toxic to Ceriodaphnia dubia survival. Therefore, <br />outfall 011 may not be in compliance with the acute WET portion of its Colorado State Discharge <br />Permit for the third quarter of 2008. <br />Methods <br />A two species acute bioassay was conducted with effluent from the Western Fuels New Horizon Mine, <br />outfall 011. An effluent grab sample was collected on September 15, 2008, stored on ice, and delivered <br />to SGS North America Inc. on the next day. The effluent sample was received at a temperature of <br />10.5°C and assigned sample tracking number 411-080-BIOA-059. The bioassay was initiated <br />approximately 24 hours after sample collection. The client was contacted upon sample receipt, notified of <br />receiving temperature, and gave verbal okay to proceed with test initiation. <br />Testing was conducted in accordance with the most recent protocols specified by the Water Quality <br />Control Division of the Colorado Department of Health (1998) outlined in Table 1. Basic characteristics <br />of the effluent and dilutions were measured by the methods and equipment outlined in Table 2. <br />The tests exposed the cladocerans, Ceriodaphnia dubia, and fathead minnows, Pimephales promeles, to <br />five concentrations of effluent, 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, and 12.5%, prepared using reconstituted <br />laboratory water- Control replicates were exposed to 100% laboratory water. <br />Statistically, the Binomial method determined the LC 50,S2. Significant differences in mortality were <br />analyzed using the Dunnett's Test and Fisher's Exact test. <br />' Supplemental forms include statistical analysis and chain-of-custody forms <br />z LCeo - an estimate of the concentration lethal to 50% of the organisms in the time prescribed by the test <br />2
