' FOURTH ANNUAL TOPSOIL AND SPOIL MONITORING REPORT
' 1989 FIELD SEASON
Introduction
Peabody Coal Company is required by the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division (CMLRD)
to monitor replaced topsoil and final graded spoil at Seneca II Mine. Monitoring programs
include verifying topsoil replacement depths, determining final graded spoil quality,
determining topsoil fertility, and completing an annual topsoil balance and redistribution
plan. This report presents the topsoil and spoil monitoring data for the 1989 calendar
' year.
Soil Pit-Topsoil Fertility-Revegetation Monitoring Data
Topsoil and spoil fertility samples are collected periodically from shallow postmine soil
pits which are placed near representative revegetation monitoring sites. The postmine
soil pits are also used to evaluate plant rooting depths and to compare topsoil/spoil
profile data with site specific revegetation data.
Postmine soil pits are placed within reclamation blocks that have been topsoiled and
seeded for a minimum of three years. Similar minimum time frames are used for monitoring
postmine vegetation. The permanent vegetation has generally established sufficiently
after three to four years to evaluate interactions between rooting depth and topsoil/spoil
quality (Schafer et. al ., 1979).
No topsoil or spoil samples were collected from shallow postmine soil pits during the 1989
' field season. Historical topsoil and spoil quality data for the 1983 through 1986
reclamation blocks are presented and discussed in the Topsoil and Spoil Monitoring reports
' for the 1986 and 1988 field seasons. Representative revegetation sites from reclamation
years 1987 and 1988 are scheduled to be sampled during either the 1990 or 1991 field
season and the data will be presented with the Fifth or Sixth Annual Topsoil and Spoil
Monitoring Report.
Spoil Sampling in the Lennox Highwall Reduction Area
' No final grading was completed in the Lennox highwall reduction area during the 1989 field
season. Therefore, no spoil samples were collected to determine sodium levels.
' PEABODY COAL COMPANY
1 Western Divislon
