survey, with the actual topsoil quantity replaced directly on final graded spoil in the
1 Wadge mining and reclamation area. The Wadge area was selected since all redistributed
topsoil was direct hauled. This eliminates a potential error attributed to changes in
bulk density between the undisturbed soil and the stockpiled topsoil. A projected topsoil
1 salvage volume of 33.5 acre feet was determined for the 19.2 acre topsoil salvage area by
overlaying Exhibit 9-1, Soil Types and Sample Locations, with the Reclamation Progress Map
1 as of December 31, 1989. The actual topsoil salvage volume (33.7 acre feet) was
determined by multiplying the topsoil replacement area (26.8 acres) by the mean topsoil
1 replacement depth (1.26 feet). The mean topsoil replacement depth was determined by using
the 14 sample points (W-226 through W-240) that were located in the three 1989 topsoil
' redistribution blocks (see Exhibit 1). The actual topsoil salvage volume essentially
equalled the projected topsoil salvage volume. The difference between actual and
projected topsoil salvage volumes was not significant enough to revise existing topsoil
1 salvage depth information for the soil map units.
1
1
1
1
1
i
1
1
1 ,o
PEABODY COAL COMPANY
Western Division
