(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-2008-008
INSPECTION DATE 10/01/08 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS PSH
OBSERVATIONS
The Red Dirt Pit, File No. M-2008-008, was inspected by Peter Hays with the Division of
Reclamation, Mining and Safety (Division) as part of the Division's 4-year monitoring
inspection program. Mr. Bill Underbrink with Grand County Department of Road and Bridge
was present during the inspection.
The Red Dirt Pit is located approximately 11 miles northwest of Kremmling, Colorado on
County Road 19 (FR 100).
The Red Dirt Pit 110c construction material reclamation permit was approved by the
Division on June 18, 2008. The northwest corner of the site was partially mined in the
past by an unknown operator. The approved 110c permit expands the affected area to the
southeast from the old mine area for a total permit size of 9.99 acres.
The Red Dirt Pit site is covered by a dense stand of doghair lodgepole pine. The trees
will be removed prior to mining the decomposed granite hillside. The upper 1 to 3 inches
of overburden and topsoil will be salvaged for reclamation. The mine will operate from
March 1 to November 15 with periods of inactivity when adverse weather conditions exist or
there is no demand for material.
No mining activities were observed during the inspection. Trees have been partially
cleared southeast of the old mine area and southwest from the center of the site to the
permit boundary. Mr. Underbrink stated the crusher has been moved to another mine site
for the winter. The mined material has been used on County Road 19, Forest Service roads
in the vicinity of the mine and the residential subdivision east of the mine. The mined
slopes have been temporarily graded to a 4:1 slope. Topsoil and tree piles were observed
along the east permit boundary.
The Red Dirt Pit is closed for season due to a contract condition with the U.S. Forest
Service and the inaccessibility of the site during the winter. The east and west
driveways were barricaded to prevent snowmobilers from used the mine site as a campground
during the winter.
The site was well organized and maintained by Grand County Department of Road and Bridge.
The mine sign and permit boundaries were observed. No problems were noted during the
inspection.
I & E Contact Address
? CE
NAME Ken E. Haynes ? BL
OPERATOR _Grand County Department of Road and Bridge ?
