BACKGROUND
As part of mining operations conducted at the Tri County Gravel pit near Hotchkiss, CO, a dike
was constructed between the north fork of the Gunnison River and the mining operation. In 2005
Tri County Gravel repaired the dike dividing the Tri County Gravel mining operation from the
north fork of the Gunnison River. This repair was necessary after a flood event in 2005 caused
the failure of the dike at both the upstream and downstream ends. The upstream dike repair was
conducted following the guidance of Crane & Associates in Delta, CO. The downstream dike
repair remains to be completed.
In December 2007, Huddleston-Berry Engineering & Testing drilled three holes across the area
of the upstream repair and gathered samples for testing. The data from these holes has been used
to create material cross-section of the dike for the purposes of this slope stability analysis. The
details of the Huddleston-Berry report can be found in Appendix A.
Tri County Dike Slope Stability Jan 08 2
