Engineering & Testing; LLC' conducted a, geotechnical
investigation at the Tri-County Gravel facility near :Crawford, Colorado. HBET understands that
there are some- questions regarding ihe. construction, of a dike along the. Gunnison River- in the
western portion of the site..
Subsurface Investigation.
The subsurface investigation included three borings as shown on Figure 1 -Site, Plan. The
borings were drilled across the narrow, northern portion of the dike as this are is likely the most
critical with. respect. to. stability. The: three borings were drilled to shale bedrock. Typed boring
logs-are included in. Ap
Boring B-1,. drilled near the western edge of the. top of .the dike, encountered .5.0 feet of sandy
gravel and cobbles above: brown, moist to wet, loose to medium. dense sandy silt to a depth of
12.3 feet. Below the silt, gray, soft-to-.medium hard, highly' weathered shale bedrock extended to
the'bottom of the boring at 14.2 feet. Groundwater was encountered in.B-1 at a depth of 11.0 ft.
Boring B 2,, drilled near-the center- of-the top of the dike; encountered 3.5 feet- of sandy gravel
above. brown, moist, medium dense: to. dense.clayey sand with gravel to a depth. of approximately
9.5 feet.. Below the: clayey sand, .brown, moist to wet, loose silty sand extended to a depth of
12.3 feet where shale bedrock:was encountered. Groundwater was encountered in B-2 at a depth
of:11.0 feet.
Boring B-3, drilled near the eastern, edge, of the top of the .dike,, encountered'9.5 feet of brown,
moist, medium dense gravelly, silty sand :above brown, moist: to wet, very dense sandy gravel to
A. depth of 12:5 feet. The gravel mas ,underlain by gray, -soft to medium hard, highly weathered
shake bedrock to the bottom of the boring, at 12.7 feet. Groundwater was encountered in, B-3- at a
depth- of 11.0 feet.
