(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-1978-266
INSPECTION DATE 09/25/08 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS PSH
OBSERVATIONS
The Riley Gravel Pit, File No. M-1978-266, was inspected by Peter Hays with the Division
of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (Division) as part of the Division's 4-year monitoring
inspection program.
The Riley Gravel Pit is located approximately 8 mile northwest of Gould, CO on JCR 25.
The permit was converted (CN-01) from an 110c to an 112c permit on March 7, 2005
increasing the permitted acreage by 15.156 acres from 3.844 acres to 19.9 acres.
The site was previously inspected.by the Division on December 29, 2004 in response to the
conversion application submittal by Jackson County.
The approved mining plan allows for a maximum disturbed area of 16.5 acres with an
excavation depth of approximately 701. Overburden and topsoil will be stockpiled as
mining progresses with expected overall stockpiles of 16,500 yds of overburden and 9,800
yds of topsoil. As indicated on the annual report maps from Jackson County, overburden
material is stockpile between the east and west gates along the south side of the permit
site. Two topsoil stockpiles are located in the southwest corner of the site and
northeast of the overburden pile. The overburden and topsoil stockpiles were vegetated
and no evidence of erosion was observed during the inspection. A large (18,000 yds)
stockpile of crushed 1" minus material was located north of the west gate. Pit Run
material was recently removed from the southwest highwall for use in the JCR 25
realignment project west of the intersection with JCR 27.
Mr. Norris stated Jackson County intends to start mining the hillside from the top
downward along the north end of the site to eliminate the highwall. The highwall is
currently 25' to 30' high. The highwall will be regarded and a road will be constructed
to allow access to the north end of the site.
The mine sign required by Rule 3.1.12(1) was posted near the west gate; however the sign
indicated an incorrect permit number. The sign indicated permit number M-77-266, instead
of the correct permit number of M-78-266. Jackson County will need to correct the permit
sign. Additional information is below in the Problems and Corrective Actions section of
the inspection report.
I & E Contact Address
? CE
NAME Andy Norris ?
