MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: m-1983-1 19
INSPECTION DATE: g.19A/?nng INSPECTOR=S INITIALS: II F /F /
MAC
OBSERVATIONS
'fills was a monitoring inspection of the Chivington Grazing mine site; permit number M-1983-1 19. This site is
located approximately four miles north and five miles west of the town of Chivington, Colorado in Kiowa
County. 1, Jared Ebert and Michael Cunningham of the Colorado Division of'Reclamation, Mining and Safety
conducted the inspection. Mr. Rodney Hopkins of Kiowva County accompanied us on the inspection.
The proper mine identification sign was in place. There were no permit boundary markers in place; this is cited
as a problem on the last page of this report. One t-post was noticed in the south east portion of the mine site
but it is unclear if this was a permit boundary marker.
This site consists of 9.7 acres, and the permit boundary is a circular shape. There was a pre-law disturbance to
the. south of the access road. Part of this existing disturbance lies inside the current permit boundary. Given the
pre-law disturbance, and the lack of boundary markers, it is hard to say if the operation is contained within its
permit boundary. Based off a visual inspection of the site, it appears that the disturbed area is at or near 9.7
acres.
The excavation is about 10-20 feet deep, the mine face slope is generally at the angle of repose or it is nearly
vertical. Several cattle paths have developed leading to the bottom of the pit. Mr. Hopkins stated that it had
been many years since the county had excavated material lrom the site. Several piles of material can be found
on the site, this material may be topsoil. According to an approved Technical Revision that was submitted to
the Division from the operator, 2000 cubic yards of topsoil should be stored on the site currently, and the county
committed to Importing 3,000 cubic yards of topsoil for revegctation purposes on the site. It is recommended
that if the mining operation on this site is nearing completion, the finial 3:1 horizontal to vertical slopes be
constructed and the area prepared for reclamation.
No other problems were noticed on this site, and the operation appears to be progressing with the approved
mining plan.
2;=2'°7__

et
Figure 1.)
